For more than 30 years Carlos Loumiet has advised clients in the business and financial services fields in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America.During those years, Mr. Loumiet has dealt with many different types of business entities and transactions, at times on a "cradle to grave" basis. He has been involved in mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings, venture capital deals, financings, infrastructure projects and other commercial transactions, often across borders. He has dealt with regulators and other governmental authorities in different countries and in a variety of contexts. His clients have ranged from governments to start-up entities, and from large financial institutions to entrepreneurial family groups. In particular, Mr. Loumiet has worked with many countries in the Western Hemisphere.
Relevant Experience
- Has been involved in the formation, acquisition, sale and regulation of banks, savings and loans, holding companies and their affiliates.
- Has worked on power plant projects in Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and Haiti.
- Has been responsible for syndicated asset-based and structured financings throughout the Hemisphere.
- Has participated in telecom projects in Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Peru.
- Has represented various Governments and multilateral institutions (IFC, CABEI, IDB) on a variety of matters.
- Has served as arbitrator in several international arbitrations.
- Has drafted anti-money-laundering legislation for Panama and Antigua and Barbuda.
- Has handled joint ventures in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Has worked with government concessions in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America and the Caribbean, at times in the context of disputes.
- Has been active in the venture capital and private equity fields.
Additional Experience
- For 19 years he was associated with Greenberg Traurig, P.A. He was a shareholder of that firm for almost 17 years, and a principal shareholder for 12 years. For 10 years he headed that firm's international and banking practices.
- At Hunton & Williams, co-chairs the firm's International Practice Group, chairs its Florida Business Group and serves on various firm management committees.
- Has taught international banking and banking regulation courses at the University of Miami Law School and Yale Law School. He is a former member of the Executive Committee of Yale Law School. He has also testified before Congress on relations with Latin America.
- In 1995, was selected by The American Lawyer as one of "45 under 45," a compilation of 45 lawyers under the age of 45 from across the United States who, in that magazine's view, might be future leaders of the legal profession. In 1996, he was selected as the "Lawyer of the Americas" by the Inter-American Law Review.
- Among his civic activities, he chaired the Florida Latin America Internet Task Force established by Florida Secretary of State Harris in 1999. Previously, he headed a Florida Bar international arbitration task force which drafted Florida's International Arbitration Act, Chapter 684, Florida Statutes, as well as two Florida Bar committees.
- Currently, Mr. Loumiet Chairs the Board of Directors of the New America Alliance, a national association for leading Latinos in U.S. business. Previously, he served as General Counsel to its philanthropic arm, the NAA Institute. He also served as the association's Compensation Committee Chairman, 2006 - 2008; Co-Chairman of the Recruiting Committee, 2005 - 2006, and Chairman, 2006-2008; and Co-Chair of its Capital Advocacy Committee, 2004 - 2008. In his capacity as NAA Chair, Mr. Loumiet is very actively involved in national Latino issues.
- In addition, Mr. Loumiet serves on the Board of Trustees of FTAA Florida, Inc., an organization which promotes the creation of the Free Trade Area of the Americas.
- In October 2004, the magazine "Hispanic Business," selected Mr. Loumiet as one of the "100 Most Influential Hispanics in the United States."
- In January 2005, Forbes Business Radio included Mr. Loumiet on its radio program, "America's Best Lawyers."
- Member of the American Bar Association and the Cuban-American Bar Association.
