Terence G. Connor

Co-Head of the Labor and Employment practice of the Miami office.  Mr. Connor's practice focuses on the litigation and trial of labor and employment claims, including complex employment and employee benefits litigation.  Mr. Connor has extensive experience in trying employment and employment discrimination cases in federal and state courts, and the counseling of employers on compliance with state and federal employment laws.  He has particular experience defending employers in the transportation and biotech industries.

Relevant Experience
  • Substantial litigation experience in employment, employee benefit and labor relations matters in state and federal courts.
  • Has obtained significant decisions in the following cases of representative interest: 
    • Geddes v. American Airlines, Inc., 960 So.2d 830, 26 IER (BNA) 631 (Fla. 3d DCA 2007);
    • Kerr-Selgas v. American Airlines, Inc., 74 FEP Cases 435 (D. Puerto Rico 1997);
    • Marajh v. Johnson & Johnson, 2008 WL 5063870 (S.D.Fla. 2008)
    • Walton v. Johnson & Johnson Services et al. 203 F.Supp. 2d 1312 (M.D. Fla 2002), aff'd 347 F.3d 1272 (11th in 2003).
    • Whitaker v. American Airlines, Inc. 285 F.3d 940 (11th in 2002); and
    • Williams v. Cordis Corporation, 16 EB Cases 2424 (BNA), 1993 WL 373940 (S.D. Fla. 1993);
  • Represented ocean carrier and tried to a defense judgment a class case in the Middle District of Florida involving the claims of some 300 union-organized ship captains who claimed some $300 million in back wages and penalties. Judgment for the employer was affirmed in the Eleventh Circuit.
  • Initiated and prevailed in a Declaratory Judgment Action against multiple employees’ threatening suit in connection with a companywide reduction in force. The appellate court decision reported at 133 F.3d 111 (1st Cir. 1998).
  • Represented employer in litigated a collective action for American Airlines involving its skycaps in Miami under the Fair Labor Standards Act. (1998)
  • Lead counsel in a class action race discrimination case tried over eight weeks to a jury in the Southern District of Florida.
  • Successfully acted for employers in claims of sexual harassment and discrimination both in summary judgment and after trial a spin-off gender discrimination case in a bench trial to a defense judgment on all but one claim. (1994)
Background
  • Served as an Air Force Judge Advocate trying courts martial in various assignments in the United States and Southeast Asia, and later as a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division prosecuting pattern and practice cases under Title VII.  From 1976 to 1979, he was labor counsel to National Airlines.
  • At the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division between 1973 and 1976, Mr. Connor was responsible for developing and litigating cases desegregating the state police forces of Maryland, Michigan and New Jersey, each of which was ultimately resolved through Consent Decrees he negotiated with the states and that were entered by the courts. Prior to leaving government service, he had initiated similar actions in New York and North Carolina that were later successful.
  • Was a member of the litigation team in United States v. AT&T, an early nationwide gender discrimination case, and in the department's desegregation cases against Jefferson County, Alabama
  • Mr. Connor has negotiated a systemwide Conciliation Agreement on behalf of National Airlines with the Washington Headquarters Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and tried to a defense judgment the cases of those who opted out of the Conciliation Agreement in Williams et al v. National Airlines, Inc. (Southern District of Florida).
