Hunton Andrews Kurth Partner Lawrence J. Bracken II Awarded Emory Public Interest Committee’s 2024 Lifetime Commitment to Public Service Award

The Emory Public Interest Committee (EPIC) honored Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP partner Lawrence (Larry) J. Bracken with their 2024 Lifetime Commitment to Public Service Award at the annual EPIC Inspiration Awards. As one of the law school’s signature events, the Inspiration Awards celebrate members of the community who do extraordinary work in the public interest and provide funding for public interest summer jobs.

“Receiving this award from the Emory Public Interest Committee is both humbling and motivating,” said Bracken. “It has been a profound privilege to serve the community with my colleagues and our friends at the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and Southern Center for Human Rights. I am deeply honored and will continue to offer my support to aspiring public interest lawyers and students along the way.”

EPIC was formed in 1989 by students committed to making public interest jobs accessible to Emory students. EPIC has successfully undertaken a major fundraising effort that has provided summer grants for students who accept volunteer positions or clerkships in public interest organizations. A number of prominent individuals have received the award, from the former Attorney General of Georgia to members of the Georgia Supreme and Federal District Courts. Past recipients include Charles A. Shanor, co-founder and co-Director of the Emory Law Volunteer Clinic for Veterans and founder of the Emory Law International Humanitarian Law Clinic; The Honorable Dorothy Toth Beasley, Court of Appeals of Georgia (retired); Frank S. Alexander (Sam Nunn Professor of Law and Founding Director, Center for the Study of Law & Religion, Emory Law) (retired); Honorable P. Harris Hines (Emory JD ’68) Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Georgia; and more.

Bracken has more than 37 years of experience litigating insurance coverage, class action and commercial cases in federal and state courts throughout the United States. He represents policyholders in insurance coverage litigation and arbitration, and is a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Lawyers. Bracken also has litigated class actions and other complex commercial disputes for more than three decades. Pro bono representation of clients in habeas corpus, prisoner rights, and landlord-tenant litigation is an important part of his practice. Bracken currently is the President of the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation.
