Joe's practice focuses on complex toxic tort and product liability litigation.

Joe has over 35 years experience in all aspects of civil litigation, both state and federal, at the trial and appellate levels. He has represented corporate clients in cases involving dozens of trials, evidentiary hearings, mediations and arbitrations, including over 25 jury trials, some lasting several months. Roughly 50% of Joe’s practice since the mid-1980s has been the defense of complex product liability and toxic tort litigation. In addition to this litigation, his experience includes other environmental litigation, premises liability and other personal injury litigation, commercial disputes, business torts, and valuation cases.

Joe was law clerk to the Honorable Robert R. Merhige, Jr. of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia from 1972-1973. He then joined the Litigation Section of Hunton & Williams. He previously was head of the National Business Torts and Product Liability Practice Group. He is admitted to practice in the First, Fourth, Fifth and Eleventh Circuits and in the U.S. Tax Court. In addition to his work at the firm and memberships listed, Joe has served as a chair and board member of several Richmond-area nonprofits.
