Prevent Blindness America is pleased to announce the election of attorney John D. O’Neill, Jr. as chair of its 2006-2007 national board of directors. O’Neill is managing partner of Hunton & Williams LLP’s 260-lawyer Richmond, Virginia office, where he also serves as co-head of the firm’s public finance practice group. O’Neill succeeds Rick Hart who served three terms as chair. He was installed at Prevent Blindness America’s 2006 Annual Meeting on December 3 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago.

“We are very fortunate to have such a distinguished and dedicated individual leading our organization in the coming year,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. “John’s experience and commitment has had a profound impact on our cause, and we are eager to work with him as our new chairman.”

Before joining the national board in 2001, O’Neill served on the executive committee and board of directors for Prevent Blindness Virginia. There he led the 20/20 Committee, a donor recruitment and recognition program, and the Richmond Swing for Sight Committee. “Prevent Blindness America plays an important role in improving the nation’s vision health,” stated O’Neill. “I am proud to be a part of that mission and look forward to celebrating the organization’s century of service in 2008.”

O’Neill earned his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Richmond and his law degree from Pepperdine University School of Law. In addition to his work at Prevent Blindness America, he is active in many civic and professional organizations, including the Central Virginia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the University of Richmond, the National Association of Bond Lawyers and the Virginia Law Foundation. O’Neill resides in Richmond, Virginia with his wife Beth and their four children.
