Hunton & Williams LLP has a dedicated team of lawyers devoted to serving emerging growth companies from pre-incorporation to initial public offering or sale of the enterprise. The firm’s emerging growth clients come from a wide range of industries, including technology, software, biotech, telecommunications, financial services, retail and manufacturing. This practice group also has extensive experience representing providers of private equity, including private equity firms, Fortune 500 companies as well as pension funds and insurance companies. Our representation includes formation and funding of private equity funds, as well as all facets of investing in portfolio companies.

Once we have been hired by an emerging growth company or an equity source, we tend to establish long-term relationships. We believe the following factors contribute to the success of our practice in this area:

  • Understanding the Client’s Legal Needs
    Beginning with a review of the client’s business plan, we strive to understand the client’s business objectives. We believe this approach is critical to serving the client in a cost-effective manner.
  • Multidisciplinary Approach
    The legal needs of our emerging growth clients often require expertise in a range of disciplines, including corporate and securities, employee benefits, intellectual property and taxes. For each client, we identify one or more lawyers in the appropriate disciplines that are assigned to the client's "Hunton & Williams team." Over time as legal needs arise in a particular discipline, the firm has one or more lawyers who have previously worked for the client and have the necessary background to work quickly and efficiently to address the client’s legal needs.

    By national standards, our firm has a very high retention rate. This attribute allows us to provide our clients with continuity of representation.

Having been involved in multiple IPOs and M&A transactions, we can foresee the hurdles a client may face down the road and help the client avoid these hurdles by planning and thinking ahead.
