Ryan's practice focuses on complex labor and employment litigation and advice with a particular emphasis on wage and hour class action litigation, complex labor law matters, and high-profile single-plaintiff litigation.

Ryan is a member of the firm's Labor & Employment Team. He frequently litigates in federal and state courts around the country. Ryan’s litigation experience includes complex wage and hour class action litigation, representation of management in high-stakes traditional labor matters before the National Labor Relations Board, and employment litigation involving upper-level executives. Ryan also regularly advises management on a full range of labor and employment issues, including labor-management relations, wage and hour compliance, federal contractor compliance, and mergers and acquisition strategy.

Ryan regularly works with clients in the coal and other natural resources, power, health care, food processing, manufacturing, consumer products, service, and retail industries.

Ryan is admitted to practice in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia. Ryan currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Richmond Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and is on the Executive Committee for the Legal Information Network for Cancer. 

Relevant Experience

  • Wage & Hour Litigation & Advice: Substantial experience litigating class and collective actions in federal and state court under Fair Labor Standards Act and state wage and hour laws. Advises management regarding compliance with Fair Labor Standards Act and state wage and hour laws.
  • Labor-Management Relations Litigation & Advice: Litigates and counsels management on variety of complex traditional labor issues, including pre-campaign advice, unit hearings, employer campaigns and elections, contract negotiations, unfair labor practice issues, strike contingency planning, plant/site shutdowns and closings, and grievance arbitrations.
  • High-Profile Single-Plaintiff Litigation: Substantial experience prosecuting and defending lawsuits in state and federal court involving claims by or against upper-level executives.
  • Federal Contract Compliance: Advises federal contractors with respect to their affirmative action obligations and defends federal contractors in investigations by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions: Provides strategic labor and employment advice in connection with corporate transactions.
