Fernando Alonso was recognized as a Trailblazer in 2017 by The National Law Journal in their M&A and Antitrust Trailblazers publication, which spotlights those making a difference in the areas of deal making, restructuring and financing. As the chair of the firm’s Latin American and Iberian practice group, Fernando has particular experience in Banking and Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions and Corporate transactions. His practice involves representation of both financial institutions and companies in connection with equity and debt financings. He has structured and directed numerous private equity deals and been involved in the structuring of several public/private partnerships, privatizations and government contracts and concessions. Fernando’s practice has three distinct aspects: (i) outbound advisory – generally involving the representation of U.S. and European companies and institutions investing in Latin America, (ii) the representation of Latin American families, groups and “multi-Latina” corporations and institutions in their expansion into the United States; and (iii) purely intra-Latin American transactions where a company or family group from one country in the region acquires an entity from or expands into another country. While Fernando generally advises as to U.S. law matters on these transactions, more and more he is managing transactions in Latin America which involve local counsel and where he provides the international experience and standards as to structuring, documentation, diligence and best practices.
