Washington— July 29, 2009 — Hunton & Williams LLP congratulates R. Hewitt Pate on his appointment as the Vice President and General Counsel of Chevron Corporation. Outgoing head of Hunton & Williams' global competition practice group and former US Justice Department Antitrust Division Assistant Attorney General, Pate will direct the worldwide legal affairs of one of the world’s largest and most respected corporations.

"Hew Pate helped expand and build our highly successful competition practice in both the U.S. and Europe, and brought great leadership to our firm," said Wally Martinez, managing partner of Hunton & Williams. "This is the well-deserved recognition of an exceptional lawyer and leader. We will miss him, but Hew will always be part of the Hunton & Williams family."

Pate remarked that "leaving good friends and our work together building a growing and successful team is difficult, but the chance to take a leadership role at Chevron is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Hunton & Williams has been a great and supportive professional home, and I look forward to watching its continued success."

D. Bruce Hoffman, former Deputy Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, and new head of the firm’s global competition practice group, added: "Hew has done a phenomenal job building and leading our competition group. It has been my great pleasure to work with him for many years. Hew has left the group in great shape for the future, and I look forward to its continued growth and success."

"Hew devoted substantial time to building a strategic international competition law practice and supporting the rapid growth of the firm's Brussels office. It has been a challenging and very rewarding venture that we look forward to carrying on," said Dr. Michael Rosenthal, Brussels office managing partner and chair of the firm's growing European competition practice.

Pate has been a partner in the firm's Washington D.C. office since 2005, when he left the Justice Department. He served in the Antitrust Division from 2001 to 2005, first as Deputy Assistant Attorney General and then as Acting Assistant Attorney General before his confirmation by the Senate as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division.

Prior to joining the Justice Department, Pate practiced at Hunton & Williams from 1990 to 2001. In 1999, he was an Ewald Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law. Before joining Hunton & Williams, Pate clerked for Justices Lewis F. Powell Jr. and Anthony M. Kennedy of the U.S. Supreme Court, and for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
