RICHMOND, Va. — September 1, 2010 — Hunton & Williams LLP is delighted to announce George H. Hettrick, firm partner and chair of the firm's Pro Bono Leadership Committee, was selected by Virginia Lawyers Media for its "Leaders in the Law" Class of 2010. Leaders in the Law honors lawyers who "set the standard" for other lawyers and recognizes lawyers and professionals in law-related fields. Only 31 honorees were selected among nominations submitted statewide. Each will be profiled in a special publication in Virginia Lawyers Weekly in early October, and honored at Virginia Lawyers Media's fifth annual awards ceremony on Oct. 21 at the Science Museum of Virginia.

"We applaud George on this richly deserved honor," said John D. O'Neill Jr., managing partner of the firm's Richmond office. "Under his leadership, the firm has taken its pro bono activities in many new directions, and 100 percent of the firm's full-time U.S. lawyers participated in pro bono projects this past year. I can think of no one more deserving to be selected to Virginia Lawyers 2010 Class of Leaders in the Law.”

Following a 25-year career as a corporate finance lawyer, Hettrick took on the challenge of leading the firm’s pro bono practice on a full-time basis and was named a 2009 Lifetime Achiever by The American Lawyer. Under his guidance, Hunton & Williams received the 2009 Pro Bono Institute's John H. Pickering Award and continues to lead the way in community service in the United States, by donating nearly 70,000 hours to pro bono service in its completed fiscal year ending March 31. Hettrick's proudest accomplishments include the creation of neighborhood-based pro bono offices for the firm in the Church Hill area of Richmond, and in Charlottesville, Va., in partnership with the University of Virginia; and the establishment of two full-time pro bono fellowships for lawyers whose time is entirely committed to pro bono work.
