NEW YORK ― October 14, 2014 ― Hunton & Williams managing partner Wally Martinez was named among “Lawyers Who Lead by Example” by The New York Law Journal (subscription required). Martinez earned this distinction, in the pro bono category, for spearheading a growing partnership between the firm and the United States Coast Guard to provide much-needed pro bono legal assistance services to members and their families.

Since the partnership with the USCG officially began in 2012, 23 lawyers have contributed more than 1,100 volunteer hours supporting civilian lawyers responsible for assisting service members with personal legal issues involving real estate, estate planning, bankruptcy, immigration and other matters. Martinez is among the program’s most active participants.

This partnership is consistent with Hunton & Williams’ tradition of providing legal support to members of the armed forces. The firm also partners with the National Veterans Legal Service Program in an ongoing, firmwide project in which more than 100 lawyers and staff members work with veterans and active duty personnel seeking military and veteran benefits.

Hunton & Williams is proud to continue to lead the way in community service among law firms in the United States, where the firm’s tradition of pro bono service is well recognized. Hunton & Williams, one of only nine firms selected to The National Law Journal’s Pro Bono “Hot List” in 2013, continues to devote significant time to serving the community throughout the United States. During the firm’s last five fiscal years, 100 percent of the firm’s full-time US lawyers worked on pro bono projects. The firm maintains three neighborhood offices — in Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia, and in Atlanta — solely dedicated to pro bono services for low-income individuals, and a full-time-staffed Pro Bono Fellows program.
