Washington — November 14, 2008 — Hunton & Williams LLP announces three changes to its Washington litigation and intellectual property practice: Michael A. Oakes and William E. Potts Jr. joined the firm as Counsel; and Evangeline C. Paschal was promoted to Counsel status, Oct. 27.

Oakes and Potts, formerly with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, are based in the firm’s Washington office and rejoin Richard L. Wyatt Jr., co-head of Hunton & Williams’ litigation, IP, competition and labor practice groups; Michael J. Mueller, co-head of the firm’s commercial litigation practice; litigation partners Joseph P. Esposito, Torsten M. Kracht, Michael A. O’Shea, and Todd M. Stenerson; and J. Steven Patterson, a corporate, securities and M&A partner.

Oakes handles complex litigation involving patent and other IP-related matters and advises clients on liability issues related to the use of technology and the Internet, including data security and privacy issues. His recent matters include representing a major Internet company in a patent infringement jury trial in Texas concerning streaming media technology and representing a leading international electronics manufacturer in a patent infringement jury trial in New Jersey concerning semiconductor memory products. He received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Virginia. He received his J.D. cum laude from the Duke University.

Potts focuses his practice on commercial, intellectual property and other complex civil litigation. Potts’ recent litigation experience includes the trial of a dispute over Native American land rights, a four-week patent infringement trial between two of the world’s largest manufacturers of DRAMs; and the jury trial of a commercial dispute between major participants in the student loan industry. An undergraduate of the University of Virginia, Potts received his law degree from The Catholic University of America, where he was an editor of the Law Review. Following law school, he held a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Oren R. Lewis, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia.

Paschal joined Hunton & Williams in August, also from Akin Gump, and quickly proved to be an integral part of the litigation and intellectual property practice. Paschal concentrates her practice focuses on class action and other large-case litigation involving subjects as diverse as the Fair Labor Standards Act, False Claims Act and securities fraud. An undergraduate of Stanford University, Paschal is an honors graduate of the University of Texas School of Law and holds a Master of Public Affairs degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas.
